Oral hygiene is the practice of keeping the mouth and teeth clean to prevent dental problems, most commonly, dental cavities, gingivitis and bad breath. Bad breath, medically called halitosis, can result from poor dental health habits and may be a sign of other health problems. GUM DISEASE

Plaque is a sticky, colorless film of bacteria and sugars that constantly forms on teeth. These bacteria use ingredients found in our diet and saliva to grow. Plaque causes cavities when the acids from plaque attack teeth after eating. With repeated acid attacks, the tooth enamel can break down and a cavity may form. Plaque bacteria create toxins that can damage the gums. If it is not removed with daily brushing and flossing it can cause Gingivitis, an early stage of gum disease. If plaque is allowed to continue to accumulate, Gingivitis can progress to advanced gum disease, called Periodontitis. Plaque can also turn into tartar (or calculus), a hard substance that can only be removed during a professional cleaning.

CANKER SORES

They are small shallow ulcers that appear in the mouth and often make eating and talking uncomfortable. Stress or tissue injury is thought to be the cause of simple canker sores. Certain foods - including citrus or acidic fruits and vegetables (such as lemons, oranges, pineapples, apples, figs, tomatoes and strawberries) - can trigger a canker sore or make the problem worse. Sometimes a sharp tooth surface or dental appliance, such as braces or ill-fitting dentures, might also trigger canker sores. Some cases of complex canker sores are caused by an underlying health condition, such as an impaired immune system; nutritional problems, such as vitamin B-12, zinc, folic acid or iron deficiency. If sores are large, painful or persistent, use of an antimicrobial mouth rinse and internal medication may reduce the pain and irritation.
