    Rheum Aid Tablets

Rheumatism is defined as any of various conditions characterized by inflammation or pain in muscles, joints or fibrous tissue. Rheumatic or musculoskeletal conditions include more than 150 diseases and can be categorized as joint diseases, physical disability, spinal disorders and conditions resulting from trauma.

Most common symptoms of rheumatic diseases are-w

    • Aching and pain involving joints
    • Swelling
    • Stiffness or restricted movement
    • Fatigue
    • Malaise
    • Fever
    • Weight loss

Rheumatic diseases are one of the most common cause of disability. The conditions that are most prevalent in population are:

    1) Osteoarthritis: Osteoarthritis, commonly called wear and tear arthritis, affects the weight bearing joints like hips, knees, and spine. It can also affect fingers, thumb, neck and large toe. Symptoms include pain and soreness especially on movement of joint, stiffness after rest, joint swelling, etc. Worldwide estimates are that 9.6% of men and 18.0% of women aged over 60 years have symptomatic osteoarthritis. 80% of those with osteoarthritis will have limitations in movement, and 25% cannot perform their major daily activities of life.

    2) Gout: Gout is a metabolic disease marked by painful inflammation of joints, deposits of monosodium urate crystals in and around joints and usually an excessive amount of uric acid in the blood. It is manifested by an acute monoarthropathy with severe joint pain, redness and swelling affecting most commonly (60%) the metatarsophalangeal joint of big toe, but can affect other joints too.

    3) Calcium Pyrophosphate Dehydrate Arthropathy: Acute CPPD (Pseudogout) presents as an acute monoarthropathy similar to gout, and affects larger joints like hip, knee or wrist. It is spontaneous and self-limiting but can be triggered by illness, injury or trauma.

Chronic CPPD presents as a polyarthritis and severe destructive changes are seen.

    4) Infectious Arthritis: Infectious or Septic Arthritis is caused by bacterial, viral or fungal infections. It presents with an acutely inflamed joint and people with pre-existing joint disease, Diabetes mellitus, Chronic renal failure, prosthetic joints and immunosuppression are more at risk.

    5) Reactive Arthritis: It is an acute non-purulent arthritis complicating an infection elsewhere in the body. It is mostly caused by infection with enteric bacteria like Shigella, Salmonella, Campylobacter species and genitourinary infection with Chlamydia trachomatis, E. coli, etc. it manifests in individuals in the age group of 18-40 years with history of enteric or genitourinary infection and symptoms include acute, symmetric, oligoarticular arthritis affecting lower extremities mostly. There may be enthesitis, dactylitis, or sausage digit, plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinitis associated with it. Inflammation can also affect the eyes, urethra, prostate, cervix, salpinx, skin and heart.

    6) Psoriatic arthritis: It is a chronic inflammatory arthritis affecting 5-42% of persons with psoriasis. Onset of psoriasis precedes development of joint disease, but it can be the other way around in some cases. Joint involvement can occur in 5 patterns - asymmetric oligoarthritis, symmetric polyarthritis, predominantly DIP joint involvement, Arthritis mutilans and Spondylitis or sacroiliitis.

    7) Polymyalgia Rheumatica: It is a clinical syndrome characterized by aching and morning stiffness in shoulder girdle, hip girdle or neck for more than 1 month, with elevated ESR. It rarely occurs before 50 years of age and is more common in women.

    Spondy Aid Drops

'Spondylosis' refers to degeneration of the spine. Most often, the term Spondylosis is used to describe osteoarthritis of the spine. This includes the discs or cushions between the vertebrae and the joints between the bones of the cervical spine. There may be abnormal growths or "spurs" on the bones of the spine (vertebrae). These changes can, over time, press down on (compress) one or more of the nerve roots. In advanced cases, the spinal cord becomes involved. The term can be used to describe degeneration in the:

    • Neck - Cervical Spondylosis.
    • Lower back - Lumbar Spondylosis.
    • Middle back - Thoracic Spondylosis

The major risk factor is aging. By age 60, most women and men show signs of Spondylosis on x-ray. Other factors that can make a person more likely to develop Spondylosis are:

    • Being overweight and not exercising
    • Heavy lifting/bending and twisting
    • Past neck/ back injury
    • Past spine surgery
    • Ruptured or slipped disc
    • Severe Arthritis
    • Small fractures to the spine from Osteoporosis
    • Heredity/Genetic Factor
    • Over straining of neck & back due to sitting jobs including work on computers

In 'Cervical Spondylosis' pain may be felt over the shoulder blade or it may spread to the upper arm, forearm or (rarely) fingers. It is usually noticed to worsen after standing or sitting/ at night/ with sneeze, cough or laugh/ bending neck backwards or walking more than a few yards. Other common symptoms include neck stiffness numbness or abnormal sensations in the shoulders or arms, headaches especially in the back of the head & loss of balance or vertigo.

'Lumbar Spondylosis' usually produces no symptoms. When back or sciatic pains are symptoms, Lumbar Spondylosis is usually an unrelated finding. Symptoms include tingling, numbness, weakness and pain that can spread through the lower back, tailbone, hip joints, buttocks, thighs, down the legs to toes and loss of bowel/ bladder control.

In 'Frozen Shoulder', the shoulder capsule thickens and becomes tight. Stiff bands of tissue — called adhesions — develop. In many cases, there is less synovial fluid in the joint. The hallmark sign of this condition is being unable to move one's shoulder - either with one's own effort or with the help of someone else, accompanied with pain initially which later spontaneously resolves.

'Spondy Aid' with its novel formulation prevents degenerative processes of these joints and provides relief from stiffness of back and aches. It also helps liberates one from other accompanying symptoms like vertigo, nausea, giddiness and weakness.

    Action of Individual remedies:

Acid formicum: Chronic arthritis of traumatic nature can be treated by formic acid. Pains usually worse on right side, motion and better from pressure.

Articular rheumatism is due to inflammation or degeneration of joints leading to pain in elbow joints, shoulder joints etc. which are labeled as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, tennis elbow, frozen shoulder etc.

Arthritis is an inflammation of joints due to infectious, metabolic, or constitutional causes. Joint pain, stiffness and swelling are the most common symptoms. There may be reduction in the range of motion, redness on the joint, with symptoms worse in morning in many cases.

Some of the most common type of arthritis are: Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis

    • Rheumatoid arthritis: It affects joints of both sides, resulting in inflammation of the joints due to an auto-immune pathology. Skin, eyes, lungs, heart, blood or nerves can also be affected with time.

Non-articular rheumatism is characterized by pain in muscles called myalgia & patients complain of lethargy, malaise and a feeling of tiredness.

Factors predisposing man to rheumatism are familial tendency, metabolic disorders, injury, stress and strain, lack of exercise, allergy, dietary factors etc.

Diagnosis is made with the help of a physical examination, blood tests like anti-CCP, RF and ANA. An X-ray, MRI or CT may also be required to rule out some causes. Treatment is focused on pain management. Heating pads or ice packs can be applied on the joint. Physical therapy and mobility assistance devices are also advised.
