An Abscess is a localized collection of pus in a cavity formed by the tissue due to an infection by bacteria, parasite or a foreign substance like splinters, needles, wounds, etc. There can be a single or multiple individual eruptions on skin called Boils, or a cluster of boils called a Carbuncle. It presents with pain, redness, swelling and warmth on touch. The redness can involve the surrounding skin as well.It is important to differentiate the skin abscess from other conditions like a sebaceous cyst, dermoid cyst, lipoma, cellulitis, etc., which may have similar symptoms. Diagnosis is mainly clinical. Preventive measures include maintenance of general hygiene, avoiding contact with someone who has an abscess, regular bathing and avoid sharing or re-using towels, sheets, etc. It is highly recommended to seek medical attention at the onset of an abscess occurrence to get the best results. Erysipelas is an infection of the superficial layers of the skin characterised by a fiery red rash with raised edges that can easily be distinguished from the skin around it. The affected skin may be warm to the touch. The most common cause is Group A streptococcal bacteria, especially Streptococcus pyogenes. It begins with minor trauma, such as a bruise, burn, wound, or incision. The lesion is red, tender and localised at first and later becomes bright red, shiny with a spreading raised border, and there can be accompanying high fever, chills, headache, nausea, and a general feeling of ill health (malaise). The skin in the affected area may resemble the peel of an orange. Insect bite and stings usually have a mild reaction with redness, itching, stinging or swelling. Severe reactions can be seen with bites from a bee, wasp, or scorpion in rare cases. It causes a red swollen lump on the skin which may be painful and itchy. An associated allergic reaction may also occur characterised by dyspnoea, dizziness and swelling of face or mouth. Improvement occurs within a few hours or days.
