    Common Cold (Viral Rhinitis)

    What is Viral Rhinitis

Rhinitis refers to the inflammation of the nasal mucosal linings which is usually associated with environmental allergies or respiratory viral infections.

Acute Viral Rhinitis is the most common form of any infectious disease of the human body. Common complaints and physical findings related to AVR are similar to those seen with other types of rhinitis such as allergic, hormonal, senile, or drug induced.

    Causes

Human rhinoviruses (HRV) are responsible for up to half of the cases of upper respiratory infections (URI) or ףcolds.פ Other viruses such as coronaviruses, adenoviruses, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), influenza viruses, and parainfluenza viruses are responsible for a relatively minor proportion of viral colds.

    Signs and Symptoms

Rhinitis presents with symptoms like excessive mucus production and rhinorrhea, nasal blockage, sneezing, watery eyes, and some degree of nasal and ocular pruritus. These symptoms have an acute beginning and typically resolve after 7 days of a self-limiting course.

On physical examination, the patientעs general appearance is very typical with a pale face, watery nose/eyes and reddish nose tip. ENT examination reveals oedematous, pale, and watery inferior turbinates bilaterally with a blocked nasal passage. In a patient with rhinitis, there may be an accompanying conjunctivitis.

    Diagnosis

In an uncomplicated case of rhinitis, blood or other laboratory testing is not necessary and history and physical findings are adequate to make a diagnosis.

    Management

The traditional treatment strategies for viral rhinitis includes

    • Hydration with plenty of fluids
    • Nutritional supplements (vitamin C, selenium, zinc, etc.)
    • Homemade soups
    • Honey
    • Bed rest or activity restriction
    • Cigarette cessation also offers some degree of symptom relief.
