    Abscess

    What is an Abscess?

An Abscess is a localized collection of pus in a cavity formed by the tissue due to an infection by bacteria, parasite or a foreign substance like splinters, needles, wounds, etc. There can be a single or multiple individual eruptions on skin called Boils, or a cluster of boils called a Carbuncle.

    Signs and Symptoms

Signs and symptoms include pain, redness, swelling and warmth on touch. The redness can involve the surrounding skin as well.

Abscess can affect any kind of tissue in the body but mostly it is seen under the skin surface (superficial eruptions called Boils). In some cases, abscess can also be found in lungs, brain, teeth, kidneys and tonsils, which require specific treatment.

Diagnosis for the skin abscess or boils is done on the basis of its clinical presentation and/ or by excision (cutting open to release the pus).

    Types and Location of Abscess

    • Perianal / Anorectal abscess
    • Retropharyngeal abscess
    • Incisional abscess
    • Skin abscess
    • Bartholinעs cyst
    • Brain abscess
    • Pyogenic liver abscess
    • Dental abscess
    • Peritonsillar abscess / Quinsy
    • Pilonidal abscess, etc.

    Management

It is important to differentiate the skin abscess from other conditions like a sebaceous cyst, dermoid cyst, lipoma, cellulitis, etc., which may have similar symptoms.

Preventive measures include maintenance of general hygiene, avoiding contact with someone who has an abscess, regular bathing and avoid sharing or reusing towels, sheets, etc. It is highly recommended to seek medical attention at the onset of an abscess occurrence to get the best results.
