Our body works on a well co-ordinated mechanism of eliminating solid and semi-solid waste materials from the Digestive Tract through a process called Defecation, also called as bowel movement. Defectaion is the last stop in the movement of food through the Digestive Tract. It is made after the Digestive System (Stomach, Small intestine & Colon) absorbs nutrients and fluid from what one eats and drinks. Any abnormalities in this process, insufficient fiber and fluids in the diet, lack of physical activity and abuse of laxatives often results in the symptom of Constipation. Constipation is defined as having a bowel movement fewer than three times per week. With Constipation, stools are usually hard, dry, small in size, difficult to eliminate and presents with symptoms of painful bowel movement, straining, bloating, sensation of a full bowel and flatulence. Constipation rarely causes any complications, however if it persists without any prompt treatment, one is at the risk of experiencing complications in the form of Haemorrhoids (Piles), fecal impaction which eventually results in pain, discomfort and bleeding. In people with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, it may present as alternating with Diarrhea as well. Understanding its causes, prevention and treatment will help most people find relief.
